5 Ways to Brighten Up Your Yard with Spray Paint

"Spray paint instantly revitalizes plastic, wood, wicker and metal surfaces."

Outdoor beautification doesn’t have to cost a lot. A quick coat of spray paint, available at The Home Depot, can do wonders at less than $10 per can.

Here are five wallet-friendly ways to make your property shine with this design essential.

1. Resuscitate old outdoor furniture

Over time, outdoor furniture can lose its luster. Fortunately, spray paint transforms plastic, wood, wicker and metal surfaces, so you can:

  • Instantly upgrade lawn chairs with textured-finish Hammered Paint for Plastic in classic Dark Bronze.
  • Give a refined patina finish to a metal dining set with Stops Rust Multi-Color Textured in Autumn Brown.
  • Protect wicker or wood conversation sets with chip- and fade-free American Accents Smooth Satin Finish Spray in a trendy summer-bright hue.
  • If you're building your own patio furniture, such as a picnic table, make custom paint the final step in your DIY project.

2. Refresh dingy railings

Once paint starts flaking off metal railings rust sets in, eroding the structure and downgrading your home’s curb appeal. Luckily, it only takes a couple of hours to fix an unsightly railing.

  • After removing rust and grime, refinish the railing with American Accents Satin Finishes Spray to match the original finish.
  • For more of a makeover, opt for a completely different shade. Black and white are classics, of course.
  • Artisan-inspired metallics such as Hammered-finish Silver, Verde Green and Dark Bronze are hot looks for summer.

3. Renew faded fences and gates

Faded metal-wire fences are easily renewed with a coat of spray paint. Wood fences have a larger surface area, so it’s best to use a paint sprayer rather than a brush. The Home Depot Tool Rentals rents them by the day, week or month.

  • Rust-Oleum Universal Advanced Formula is a premium all-surface paint that provides the ultimate long lasting protection and durability. It provides excellent coverage on plastic, wood, metal, concrete, wicker, aluminum and masonry surfaces, and has a convenient any-angle sprayer.
  • For professional results, make any necessary repairs before you start painting.

4. Reveal a beautiful “new” door

Few things are more welcoming to guests than a freshly painted front door. If yours has seen better days, there’s no need to replace it—just give it a makeover.

  • A high-gloss finish in a bold hue such as red or black is traffic-stopping, while muted historic shades such as satin-finish Colonial Red or Nutmeg give a customized look to even a standard-issued front door.
  • Durable General Purpose spray paint comes in 23 colors and stands up to daily use.
  • Add a new kick plate and door hardware for an even more high-impact makeover.

5. Revive a tired-looking mailbox

Brighten a beat-up mailbox with a quick application of paint. Trying to decide on a finish? Here are some suggestions based on popular house styles:

  • For a sleek urban look, consider American Accents Designer Metallic in Satin Nickel.
  • For a traditional country-inspired style, try Stops Rust in Brown Hammered.
  • To get a quaint seaside feel, use Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2x in a vibrant vintage hue such as Apple Red, Warm Yellow or Spa Blue. It provides twice the coverage on wood, metal and wicker and is fast drying.

GardenBloom, Yes. Step 1: clean the surface (either with pressure washer or old fashion hand scrub with water and soap) Step 2: let surface completely dry (time will depend on whether conditions) Step 3: apply paint for plastic primer onto surface Step 4: let surface dry (10-15 mins) Step 5: use any general purpose spray paint or paint for plastic

@ Nyarah Thanks for your comment. Zep carries a wide range of cleaning products, available at The Home Depot. There is also Goo Gone, and if you're having a hard time removing the paint, paint thinner will do the trick as a last resort.
